Cruising is our favorite vacation. If we are not on a cruise, we are counting down to our next one. I am going to share with you some “extras” that I have learned that are very useful. This is not your basic, swimsuit, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen etc. type of list. These are things that you may not think about.
*Folder or Travel Organizer Case*
You will need this for passport, birth certificate, boarding pass and other important documents.
*Plug Power Strip with USB Port*
There is only one outlet in the staterooms. You are allowed to bring a power strip with no surge protector. It’s also nice to have one with USB ports for cell phones, tablets, Fitbit etc.
*Towel Clips*
It’s very windy on a cruise. Towel clips are great, you won’t have to worry about your towel blowing away. No need to take beach towels, they have them on the ship and you are allowed to take them off the ship at ports.
*Luggage Tags*
You will have to print your luggage tags. You can buy clear luggage tag holders to put them in. I recommend putting ribbons or something on your luggage so it’s easy for you to identify.
*Lanyard*
You will need a lanyard for your sail and sign card. Your card works like a debit card on the ship and your room key. You will need it to get off and on the ship, it’s very important to keep up with it.
*Packing Cubes*
These are great for packing. I normally put swimsuits in one, undergarments in one, shorts, T-Shirts. I leave those things in them when I unpack in the room. It helps with organization and space.
*Downy Release*
This stuff works wonders. Just spray on your clothes.
*Clothes Pins*
In the shower is a retractable clothesline. You can hang your wet swimsuits etc on.
*Bluetooth Speaker*
There is music around the main pool, most of the time, but there isn’t any on the serenity deck, back pool and other areas of the ship. They are nice to have in your room or balcony.
*Binoculars*
You never know what you might see out on the seas. It’s really cool to see other ships passing by too.
*Small Crossbody Purse or Wristlet*
This is good for ladies to have for dinner & nightlife.
*Bonine, Dramamine, Tums, Motrin/Tylenol, Benadryl
I like Bonine but Dramamine works well too. Benadryl because you never know if you may have an allergic reaction to something.
*Cash*
You will not need cash on board, but you may need it at ports, tips for tour guides or taxi rides. Bring small bills. Also, remember to tip the porter guys that help with your luggage. It’s recommended a dollar per bag.
*Door Hanger*
All of the doors look alike and it’s easy to get turned around in those long halls. It can be something as small as a chalkboard that you’ve decorated, a ribbon or bow. Some people go all out on door decorations.
This is a door hanger that I made.
I had this one made from http://www.shindigz.com for under $20 and I will use it over and over again.
*Insulated Cup*
The cups on the ship are small and have to refill them often. I like taking my own for tea, water or soda. I have a bubba cup & love it. Also if you like straws, bring your own.
*Drawstring Backpack*
I use this around the pool & during the day. You can put your sunscreen, phone, book, whatever you want or need in it. They are easy to put on your back and you have your hands free, especially in the food line.😉
Other things…..
*Small First Aid Kit*
*Small Fan*
*Shout wipes*
*Hand Sanitizer*
*Extra Plastic Hangers*
*Ziplock Bags*
*Waterproof Cellphone Holder*
I know this sounds like a lot of extras, and some of this they sell on board, but it’s expensive. You may not be able to buy all of this at once. I have built my collection up over time. I have a special place that I put my cruise items and only use them for that.
I will be blogging more about cruising and ports at another time.
I hope this helps you with your cruise packing.

Double yes to that lanyard because keeping track of that little card can be surprisingly hard.

I would add taking the same design t-shirt for everyone in your cruising group. Wen you get off at a port, have everyone wear their shirt. Then, if some is missing from the group you can ask if you have seen a 7 year old wearing a shirt just like mine. We usually travel with another senior couple and do this. It really helps and we have even seen people onboard buying up same design t-shirt before we get to the next port!

I can’t believe I’ve never thought of the door decoration. It is so easy to get confused in a sea of doors (pardon the pun.) I also didn’t realize that plugs were at such a premium. A simple triple adapter to put in the plug would be a great idea, and not take up too much space, as long as it doesn’t short.

Nice tips, especially given the fact that I don’t do cruises that often and that I would need few guidelines the next time I do. 🙂
Good reminder to have few bills in a pocket when going off the ship. One usually forgets, having in mind that you don’t actually need cash on board.
Would have to save this list, thanks! 🙂
